On June 9, the University of Vermont Health Network (UVM) announced system-wide layoffs and service reductions, including the closure of the Adirondack Blood Donor Center. This closure is a huge blow to patient care in the North Country: the center currently supplies blood to people across three counties, including patients at UVM-Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH), UVM-Alice Hyde Medical Center, UVM-Elizabethtown Community Hospital and Adirondack Medical Center.
Closing the blood bank, during a nationwide blood shortage, will have a negative impact on access to care for patients across the North Country.
CVPH nurses and healthcare professionals are pushing back on the layoffs and service reductions to protect patient care and defend strong union jobs in their community! UVM has eliminated 142 positions across the network, with potentially more to come. The nurses who operate the center have long ties to this community and deep knowledge of donor and patient history, blood type compatibility, and who to call in case of an emergency.
